Walks in New York

Hidden gems

Three things most visitors walk straight past

  1. 01

The narrowest house in the city

75½ Bedford Street is 9.5 feet wide. Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there, and so, later, did Cary Grant. Presumably sideways.

  2. 02

    Stables with a price tag

Washington Mews was built for the horses of the families on Washington Square North. The cobblestones were laid for hooves; the rents were not.

  3. 03

    A garden most locals miss

Behind the 1821 Church of St. Luke in the Fields is a walled garden of more than two-thirds of an acre, open to anyone who finds the gate on Hudson Street.
