Hidden gems
Three things most visitors walk straight past
- 01
The two-tone monument
Construction of the Washington Monument stalled in 1854 and resumed more than twenty years later with marble from a different quarry. You can see the seam.
- 02
The missing cornerstone
George Washington laid the Capitol's cornerstone in 1793. Nobody has been able to find it since.
- 03
A station under the circle
Beneath Dupont Circle runs a streetcar tunnel that opened in 1949 and closed in 1962. It has spent most of the years since waiting for a second act.
