Hidden gems
Three things most visitors walk straight past
- 01
Only one piazza
Venice's squares are called campi — fields — because most of them were. Only St Mark's gets to be a piazza.
- 02
One bridge for three centuries
The stone Rialto Bridge, finished in 1591, was the only way across the Grand Canal on foot until the Accademia bridge opened in 1854.
- 03
Books in the bathtub
Libreria Acqua Alta stores its books in bathtubs, boats and a gondola, so the stock floats when the high water comes in.
