Hidden gems
Three things most visitors walk straight past
- 01
Ginza means "silver mint"
The shogunate moved its silver mint to this patch of reclaimed land in 1612. The coins left; the name and the money stayed.
- 02
The clock that outlasted the war
The Wako building's clock tower at Ginza 4-chome went up in 1932 and survived the bombing of Tokyo. It still keeps time over the crossing.
- 03
A forest planted by volunteers
The woods around Meiji Jingu look ancient. They were planted from 1915 with around 100,000 trees donated from all over Japan.
