Hidden gems
Three things most visitors walk straight past
- 01
A landmark you can ride
San Francisco's cable cars were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. They still run on the same principle as in 1873 — a moving cable under the street.

An organ played by the tide
The Wave Organ, on a jetty in the Marina, has pipes that sound as the bay rises and falls. Best at high tide; built in 1986 from old cemetery granite.

The baths at Land's End
Adolph Sutro's public bathhouse opened in 1896 with seven pools of fresh and salt water. Its concrete ruins are still there, at the edge of the Pacific.
